Nickel is a transition metal element with element symbol Ni, located in group VIII of the fourth period, with atomic number 28. Nickel is a silver-white metal with good mechanical strength and ductility. It is insoluble in water and has strong corrosion resistance to acids and alkalis, but it is easily soluble in dilute nitric acid and aqua regia. High temperature resistance, melting point 1455 °C, boiling point 2730 °C. The density is 8.902g/cm³. It can be used to make currency, etc. It can be plated on other metals to prevent rust.
 
Clinical observation: In the bodies of higher animals and humans, the biochemical functions of nickel are not yet understood. But in vitro experiments, animal experiments and clinical observations have provided valuable results.
 
In vitro experiments showed the affinity of nickel thiamine pyrophosphate (cocarboxylase), pyridoxal phosphate, porphyrin, protein and peptide, and proved that nickel also binds to RNA and DNA.
 
When nickel is deficient, six dehydrogenases in the liver are reduced, including glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, lactate dehydrogenase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase and glutamate dehydrogenase. These enzymes are involved in the production of NADH, anaerobic glycolysis, the tricarboxylic cycle and the release of nitrogen from amino acids. In addition, nickel deficiency shows changes in the structure of liver cells and mitochondria, especially the irregular inner reticulum, and the mitochondrial oxidation function is reduced.
 
The blood nickel content of anemia patients decreases, and iron absorption decreases. Nickel has the effect of stimulating hematopoietic function. After nickel supplementation in humans and animals, red blood cells, heme and white blood cells increase.
 
Taking a large amount of nickel salt drugs by mouth is less toxic than the nickel directly into the blood, causing vomiting, diarrhea, and acute gastroenteritis and gingivitis. The general nickel salt has low toxicity, but colloidal nickel or nickel chloride, nickel sulfide and nickel carbonyl are more toxic, which can cause central circulation and respiratory disorders, and cause edema, hemorrhage and degeneration of the essential muscles, brain, lungs and kidneys.
