Aluminum Nitride Overview
Aluminum nitride is stable at high temperatures in an inert atmosphere, melting at temperatures around 2200°C. In a vacuum, AlN decomposes at about 1800°C. In air, surface oxidation occurs above 700°C. Surface oxide layers as thick as 5-10 nm can be detected even at room temperature. The oxide layer protects the material at temperatures up to 1370°C.
